LINGUOCULTURAL PECULIARITIES OF TOPONYMS IN THE BABURNAMA AND THEIR TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH

The Baburnama contains a large number of place names that reflect not only geographical locations but also the linguistic and cultural environment of Babur’s time. For this reason, the translation of such names into English involves more than simply transferring a geographical term from one language into another. This article discusses the linguocultural characteristics of selected toponyms in the Uzbek text of Boburnoma and compares their forms in the English translations by John Leyden and William Erskine, Annette Susannah Beveridge, and Wheeler M. Thackston. The main focus is placed on transliteration and calque as two frequently observed ways of rendering culturally marked geographical names. The analysis also shows that a combination of transliteration and explanation can help preserve both the identity of the original name and the cultural information associated with it.
