INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract

The development of foreign language communicative competence has become an essential component of contemporary higher education. The increasing internationalization of academic and professional environments requires university students to use foreign languages not only for understanding linguistic information but also for participating effectively in academic discussions, professional communication, intercultural interaction, collaborative projects, and digital communication. This article examines innovative approaches to developing students’ foreign language communicative competence in higher education. Particular attention is given to communicative, task-based, project-based, learner-centered, collaborative, and technology-enhanced approaches. The study analyzes the relationship between linguistic knowledge and practical communicative performance and identifies pedagogical conditions that contribute to students’ active participation in foreign language learning. The role of authentic materials, professional contexts, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, peer interaction, reflective learning, and formative assessment is also considered. The article proposes an integrated pedagogical framework in which foreign language instruction is organized around meaningful communicative tasks, learner autonomy, professional relevance, and continuous feedback. The proposed approach is intended to facilitate students’ transition from controlled language practice to independent and context-sensitive communication.
